Tess lay still on her back with her round belly exposed. The doctor came in and washed her hands. She then squirted some warm gel onto her stomach.
“So what do you guys think you’re having?”
Augustus responded. “To be honest it doesn’t matter, but I wouldn’t mind a son. Boys are born first in my family so that’s what I think it is.”
“Well…I don’t know, but for personal reasons I’m not going to lie. I just feel a little anxious about what sex it is.”
The doctor responded as she placed her wand onto her stomach to get an image.
“That’s a perfectly normal feeling for a new expectant mom. Okay, here we are. I see arms, legs, fingers, and facial features. And look, is that a tiny little penis?”
“I knew it!” Augustus shouted.
Tess held her breath for a minute. She had a funny feeling she couldn’t identify.
The doctor interrupted, “No! Wait a minute. That was the umbilical cord.” She hit a couple more buttons on the machine and repositioned her wand. “Mom and dad, say hello to your little girl!”
The doctor wiped her stomach off.
“Dad, while mom gets dress we have a gift for first time moms, can you come with me to pick it up. It’s too heavy for her and me. It’s an infant car seat.” A tear dropped from the corner of Tess’s eye. She turned to look at Augustus.
“August, are you disappointed?”
He reached down to support her head while he planted a kiss on her lips.
“Not in the least, but you know what this means don’t you?”
“Yes, I do. Our baby gets the inheritance. August, I didn’t plan this.”
He placed his finger over her lips. “Hush! We’ve already been through this. I had a part in getting you pregnant didn’t I? I knew we had no protection. So let’s put that thought behind us.”
“Yes, you’re right. We must now focus on the baby.”
“I’m going to go call the family and give them the good news. Are you okay? Do you need any help?”
“No, I don’t need any help. I’m alright. I’ll be out shortly.”
Tess closed her eyes and took a deep breath when the doctor and Augustus left the room. She changed back into her clothes.
